A complaint by an author from Calgary has sparked a complete outrage on Twitter about the policies of Air Canada, after the airline did not allow him to transfer a voucher to his wife ahead of her flight since they both did not have the same last name. The complainant, 40-year-old Chris Turner, confessed that he did not expect this much support and reaction from the public, as he alleged that “I’ve complained about Air Canada before on Twitter, and you get a couple of retweets — but you don’t get hundreds and hundreds of them.”
The tweet posted by Turner on Tuesday alleged that he had asked the airline to transfer a $400 travel voucher to his wife, Ashley Bristowe, which he acquired earlier in September after volunteering to take a later flight since the airline overbooked a scheduled flight. He stressed having had asked the officials at the time if it would be possible to later transfer the voucher to his wife, and he was told it wouldn’t be a problem. However, when he tried to do that recently, Turner said he was not allowed to transfer the voucher to his wife before the flight because she didn’t have the same surname.
In light of the attention received by Turner’s complaint on Twitter, Air Canada’s social media team has announced to make an exception in this case. Although he did say that “It doesn’t change the fact that they are offering an inferior level of service on the basis of the fact that my wife didn’t change her name.”
