An Edmonton woman who works as a strategic planner with the Alberta Ministry of Environment, Christy Foley, has gotten one step closer to fulfilling a life-long dream of living on Mars. Foley is among the 1,058 candidates shortlisted to board \ a one-way voyage to the Red Planet and participate in the Mars One project.
Out of more than 200,000 people from around the world who applied to be the part of a privately funded project, only 75 Canadians made it through the first round of the selection process. Foley is ambitious to be a member of the first permanent human colony on Mars starting in 2024. She confessed that she has been fascinated with space since childhood, and later having a one-time meeting with a Canadian astronaut multiplied her desire to reach Mars. She stated that “I’ve grown up star-gazing and watching sci-fi…I met Roberta Bondar,” and “these all add to my desire to take the next step forward and colonize Mars.”
However, Foley’s husband also applied to be a participant of the project but failed to make it through. Though it was hard for her to accept it at first, Foley now claims that she has her husband’s full support. She mentioned that “this dream is so much bigger than one relationship. He recognizes that and he wants to help me reach the stars,” while adding that “he doesn’t want to anchor me to the Earth… When he said that, it made my heart flutter.”
