A huge fire that erupted at 542, 544 and 546 Gilmour Street led the Ottawa fire crews in action as they battled the blaze on late Sunday night, which resulted in shifting of two people to a nearby hospital and leaving more than a dozen people homeless. The fire started at around 10:24 on Sunday night and continued burning in the early hours of Monday morning, while several fire fighters were still on site as of 6 a.m. on Monday.

According to the Ottawa Fire Services spokesperson, Marc Messier, a burning candle is the suspected cause, though the crews are still investigating. Upon arrival of paramedics, they stablized an 80-year-old man who had trouble breathing and was sent to a nearby hospital along with a 22-year-old woman. It was later confirmed that both patients are in stable condition at the hospital. On the other hand, Ottawa police decided to close Gilmour Street between Bay and Lyon streets, Lyon Street between Somerset and Bay streets, and Bay Street between Somerset and James streets.

An emailed update provided by the fire service explained that the fire overall damaged three multi-unit complexes. It was elucidated that 542 Gilmour had fire damage to rear of the complex, 544 Gilmour had fire damage to five units and 546 Gilmour had fire damage to four units. Moreover, the fire department speculated the estimated cost of damage and pegged it to be around $1.5 million dollars to buildings and $500,000 to contents.
