The Board of Directors of Restaurants Canada have requested an emergency meeting with Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, as they claim to have encountered a crisis level labour shortage in several regions of the country. During a press conference, two dozen restaurant industry leaders convened from all over Canada to unitedly emphasize on the urgency for action.
Restaurants Canada president and CEO, Garth Whyte, mentioned that “the recent moratorium on temporary foreign workers in the foodservice industry has turned the labour shortage into a crisis.” Restaurants Canada Chair who also owns and operates three foodservice businesses in Charlottetown, Liam Dolan, alleged that “it’s having a negative impact not only on business owners, but on their employees and customers as well.” Furthermore, he stated that “board members from across the country identified the labour shortage crisis as the number one issue affecting their business,” adding that “we need the government to act now.”
During the press conference, Dolan and two of his fellow board members shared their stories. Proprietor of James Joyce Irish Pub, Gerard Curran, explained that “I’ve had to open my kitchen one hour later and close it one hour earlier because I’m operating at a 30 per cent shortage of labour. This situation is taking a toll on all my employees, including one who is in the hospital right now due to stress created by an increased workload and a lot of uncertainty.”
Restaurant owners complain that it takes twelve to eighteen months to land a TFW at their workplace, yet after less than a month the moratorium on temporary foreign workers in the food service industry has turned the labour shortage into a crisis? Oh please. I think someone is telling a little fib here.
If the restaurant closes on Sunday that may be a good thing as it gives everyone a much needed day off with their families to rejuvenate. Perhaps it would have helped the worker who the employer says is in hospital due to due to stress created by an increased workload and a lot of uncertainty. I am betting these businesses don’t offer health benefits to support their stressed employees.
Conscomment_IDering their online petition has only received 3000 names from across Canada, I think this pacomment_ID lobby group should be looking elsewhere for sympathy. Very little of what they say has any credibility.
Anyone who supports this program, should have their citizenship revoked and then thrown out of the country ! The message here MUST be, CANADIANS FIRST !!!!! I need a job and these axxholes are hindering me from getting one ! If I don’t get a job soon, I will have no choice but to resort to crime to survive. YOUR CHOICE HARPER, YOU IDIOT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
