Unrolling some more of his election goals, Toronto’s Mayoral candidate John Tory vowed to make the city keep a zero-tolerance zone for illegal parking and adopt a 24/7 approach to road construction. During a press conference on Adelaide St on Thursday, Tory unveiled a “Fighting Gridlock Initiative.”
Explaining his plans, Tory elucidated that “I just think people are fed up with the fact to the needs of drivers and by that I include drivers of cars, of trucks and of transit vehicles.” He alleged that “what we need at the City Hall is better management of these issues, a better attitude that is more sensitive to the needs of people trying to get around the city … and some real leadership.” He also added that “we have to start acting … and start taking action to get this city moving, to get this city back on track and I intend to do that.”
According to Tory’s plan, he will impose a zero-tolerance rule for delivery vehicles that block lanes on major roads, highlighting his intention to use “tow it” policy during rush hour, and to ask Toronto Police to focus parking enforcement officers on major roads particularly during rush hour. Tory also promised to create a major route construction coordination committee, which he will chair himself for the first six months of his term, and examine all major road contracts to see if work could be done on a 24/7 work basis. He said that “I think we really do have to have zero tolerance for vehicles of all kinds … in lanes of major arteries during rush hour.”
