Since November of 2009 elderly Winnipeg citizens had been the victims of a scam in which the suspect(s) called an elderly grandparent claiming to be his or her grandchild. The suspect(s) claimed that they were in jail, or that they had some other critical emergency, requiring money to be wired transferred to his or her location.

The “grandchild” would further encourage the grandparent not to say anything to anyone as he or she is embarrassed about being in trouble. In some instances another person pretending to be a lawyer, talks to the victim and provided them with direction on where and to whom, they should wire transfer this money.

Confirmed losses in Winnipeg have totalled in excess of $80,000, with potential losses being closer to $150,000.

The Winnipeg Police Service Commercial Crime Unit in cooperation with other law enforcement agencies across the country had been involved in an ongoing investigation regarding these scams.

As a result of these efforts, and with the assistance of the Toronto Police Fraud Squad, two arrests have been made by the Peel Regional Police Fraud Bureau.

On October 4th, 2010 Nadia ROUBOS, 23 years of Ontario has been arrested and charged with Fraud Over $5,000 and Conspiracy to Commit Indictable Offence.

On October 26th, 2010 Johnnathan Campbell HUNTER, 34 years of Ontario has been arrested and charged with:

– Defraud the Public

– Fraud Under $5,000 X 27
