Officials have confirmed that a Surrey man was shot dead by officers outside of a Safeway after he reportedly went inside, took a knife and chased at least one staff. Thereafter, the man allegedly left the store and was shot by transit police. Officials confirmed that the man was immediately shifted to hospital, but failed to survive and died.
A spokesperson for the Independent Investigations Office (IIO), Kellie Kilpatrick, confirmed that the “initial reports are that a male was at the store, distraught, he left the store and subsequently came into contact with transit police who shot the affected person, who we learned a short time ago did not survive his injuries.” However, Ms. Kilpatrick failed to “confirm” whether the man stabbed himself in the store, though she said that “certainly it’s information that has been provided” to the investigators, adding it is “critically important” to learn what transpired in the store. She stressed that “so the witnesses who were at the scene prior to the incident, and any video that we obtain from the area, that will help us determine what the affected person activities were leading up to the incident.”
According to a man whose girlfriend works in the Bakery, Blake Simning, his girlfriend informed that the “…had no shirt on. He started stabbing himself and going up and down the aisles screaming and ranting.”
