Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles, CA)
The sumptuous sacred music of the great Russian composers, once shunted aside by the country’s transition to the secular Soviet Union, will fill L.A.’s gorgeous Walt Disney Hall, courtesy of the Los Angeles Master Chorale and its artistic director Grant Gershon. The acclaimed 116-voice ensemble is set to sing some of the grandest religious works ever composed by Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky, as well as Gretchaninov and Ilyashenko, including two different settings of the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. This ambitious concert comes to a climax with the West Coast premiere of Sofia Gubaidulina’s 1997 The Canticle of the Sun, a dramatic piece for 24 singers, percussion and cello, as performed by Robert deMaine, the LA Philharmonic’s principal cellist.
