On Monday, February 21st, 2011, just after lunch, Elk Valley RCMP officers responded to the report of a student with a gun at the Sparwood Secondary School. A student had reportedly been seen with a handgun in his back pack but has since departed the school upon police receiving the complaint. The Secondary School and the adjacent Elementary School immediately implemented their lock down procedures.

Police searched the area surrounding the schools however the youth was not located. A short time later, police located the youth at his Sparwood residence where he was taken in to custody without incident. Three firearms were seized from the residence including a handgun believed to be the one involved in this matter.

At this point in the investigation it is believed a handgun was taken to the school and shown to some students however the handgun contained a lock and is not believed to have been used or presented in a dangerous manner.

The matter is still under investigation with Criminal Code charges being considered.
