Five inmates charged for murder at Edmonton prison

The Edmonton Police Service Homicide Section, with the assistance and support of the Correctional Service of Canada, have arrested and charged five inmates in connection with the death of another inmate at the Edmonton Institution.

Warrants were requested, and five serving inmates of the Edmonton Institution were charged in the incident:

Joshua Daniel Pickunyk, 21, was charged with one count of murder – 1st degree, one count of disguised with intent, and one count of possession of a weapon.
Brent Harold Boake, 20, was charged with one count of murder – 1st degree, and one count of possession of a weapon.
Bruce Dean Jacobsen, 28, was charged with two counts of accessory after fact to murder, and one count of obstructing justice.
Brett Michael Schmid, 23, was charged with two counts of accessory after fact to murder, and one count of attempted obstruction of justice.
Rahim Bhanji, 20, was charged with two counts of accessory after fact to murder, and one count of attempted obstruction of justice.
The first of the court appearances is scheduled for June 14, 2011.

Background: The Edmonton Police Service responded to a call from the Edmonton Institution on a report of a suspicious death of an inmate around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 26, 2011. EPS Homicides Detectives were called in to assist with the investigation. The victim was identified as Gyozo Victor Barasso, 45. The Medical Examiner conducted the autopsy on February 28, 2011, and ruled the manner of death as a homicide, with the cause of death being multiple stab wounds.
