WilliamsNew York Police Department’s “stop, question and frisk” policy has landed them in great trouble yet again. It is assumed that this policy primarily targets young blacks and Latinos. The detention of two African American city officials has heated up this notion further.

City Councilman Jumaane Williams and Kirsten John Foy, director of community relations for the Public Advocates office were detained on Monday afternoon during the West Indian Day Parade, while using a closed sidewalk. The two city officials adamantly claim that they would not have been handcuffed and detained if they had been white. This case is now being highlighted as an incident of racial profiling.

New York Police Chief Raymond Kelly is reported to have said that an investigation is already underway regarding this confrontation.

On the other hand, William has outlined that they had acquired permission to walk on the sidewalk from one of the police officers “in a white shirt”. William and Foy have also publically denounced this incident in print media as well as in a news conference.

At the same time city officials have demanded a reevaluation of the tactics of New York Police Department and specially the “stop, question and frisk” policy that has had 600,000 people randomly stopped on the streets as potential criminal suspects in the previous years.
