All major cities across Canada hosted ceremonies to mark the 27th anniversary of the Montreal Massacre on Tuesday. A gunman shot 14 women dead at Ecole Polytechnique on December 6th, 1989 as he ranted that feminists had ruined his life. Primary services held in London included the Ritual of Remembering service at noon at Brescia University College and a candlelight vigil at 5:30 p.m. in Victoria Park at the Women’s Monument.

During an interview, executive director of the London Abused Women’s Centre, Megan Walker, revealed that she remembers the day vividly. Walker explained “I can remember exactly where I was 27 years ago on December the 6th when I heard the news. I was a new mom, I had two little daughters and my heart broke because it really hit home that day that all women are potential victims of violence and femicide for no other reason than their sex.” Every December 6th, Canadians remember the 14 victims, and recognize the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

In her remarks, Walker elucidated that Montreal Massacre spurred her on to do the work she does with the London Abused Women’s Centre. According to Walker, “it was absolutely the catalyst in my life that drove me to become involved with this issue. I now have three daughters who are all young adults and every day that I’ve ever done this work, I’ve always woken up in the morning thinking of them and thinking of the life I would want for them and for all young girls and women.”
