Several South Indian cities including Dharavi, Chembur, Matunga and parts of Navi Mumbai were in mourning today after Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa’s was laid to rest today. People who were earlier praying for her recovery have now started offering prayers for the peace of her soul.

Several members of the Tamilian community broke down as their beloved Amma was consigned to the elements on Tuesday evening. Bhagat Singh Nagar’s R Muthuswamy mentioned that “I was not as affected when my property back home was destroyed during the flood as I am now. She opened kitchens for the poor where they were fed sambar rice or curd rice for Rs 5 and roti for one rupee. Which leader has done that? Jayalalithaa’s passing is truly the end of an era.”

Across Chembur and Dharavi, banner makers and manufacturers of photo frames were busy through the night preparing posters for Tuesday’s public memorials. A banner maker from Chembur, Stanley Joseph, explained that “the end was not unexpected since the Puratchi Thalaivi was ailing for months. But that does not lessen the pain of the shock. There was a large gathering this morning where collective wailing could be heard far away.” Another shop owner mentioned that “I wanted to visit Chennai for a final glimpse but how would I reach in time for the funeral,” when he heard about the news of Amma’s death.
