He could not breathe despite oxygen and his team left him at the summit declaring him dead. However, another team of mountaineers ascending to the peak found him alive and brought him down with them to surprise the world the next day.
56-year-old mountaineer was living in Blue Mountains with his wife and two kids. He was amongst the team which discovered the top of the world for the first time ever in 1984, however due to altitude sickness he could not make it to the peak of Everest back then and did so again in 2006. He was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his contribution and services to the mountaineering community of Australia. He also became the founding member of the Australian Himalayan Foundation in 2003.
Simon Bladerstone, his good friend and the now chairperson of Himalayan Foundation, expressed that he was devastated by the death of his friend.
He said, “There were very few tougher, better climbers in the world, and very few better people. Frankly, I’m grief stricken. He was a dear friend and a simply wonderful human being and a wonderful humanitarian. I guess I finally have to admit he wasn’t invincible”.
