Though the weather forecast predicts chilly temperatures this fall, our makeup routines are typically on the warmer side. Our #FOTD usually consists of golden shadow, Champagne-colored highlighter, and lots of vampy lipstick. But as we’ve started perusing the shelves at some of our favorite stores for new fall makeup, we’ve realized that cool-toned colors are having a moment — and we’re not mad at it.
Many brands have pivoted away from the warm and fuzzy colors synonymous with autumn — rich browns, dimensional golds, vibrant reds — and launched brand new goods that give us icy vibes instead. Silver highlighter has emerged (we’re looking at you, Rihanna), along with a selection of eyeshadow palettes and shimmer toppers that remind us of frosty makeup from our childhood, but all grown up.
We’ve rounded up some of our favorite cool finds from the beauty aisle, because everything that glitters does not have to be gold.
If you’ve already hit pan on Fenty Beauty’s buzzy Trophy Wife highlighter, consider testing out its silver twin sister this season. It has a bouncy, gel-to-powder texture that you can lightly dust on or layer for a dramatic look. It creates a diamond-like glow on a variety of skin tones, and you can see what it looks like on Refinery29 editors before you take the plunge.

You don’t have to fork up a ton of cash on a cool-toned palette — especially if it’s out of your comfort zone. This one from Sephora Collection will only set you back 10 bucks and has eight matte and shimmer shades that are super pigmented, plus a golden hue to balance your look is you feel too chilly.

This topper looks pink in the tube, but when blended onto your eyelids it morphs into a shimmery green hue with flecks of iridescent glitter. Pat it over metallic eyeshadow to intensify the pigment, or use it solo to create a soft glow. If you’re feeling really bold, dab some of this on top of your favorite matte lipstick color to give it a multidimensional effect.

If you want to dabble into green eyeshadow, but don’t want to end up looking like Poison Ivy, you’ll love this earthy palette. It comes with six cool shades (including an army green shimmer), that are totally wearable day or night.

Whether your idea of a smoky eye is a jet black crease with a silver lid or a brown outer corner with hints of gold, you can achieve it with this palette. It comes with 14 neutral matte and shimmer shades that have a vivid color payoff on a variety of complexions.

This shimmer duo is ideal if you want to ease into the cool-toned makeup trend.
