Aero Theatre (Santa Monica, CA)
See classic performances from the first great rock festival of the 1960s, as captured by one of the world’s most acclaimed documentary filmmakers, when the historic Aero Theatre screens Monterey Pop. Director D.A. Pennebaker, who made his name following Bob Dylan in 1967’s Dont Look Back, filmed the 1967 Monterey International Pop Festival, including brilliant performances by Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding, The Who, Simon & Garfunkel, and many more rock legends. In 2010, Time Out named Monterey Pop one of the 50 greatest documentaries of all time. The screening is followed by a pair of short films delving further into individual performers at the festival: the 50-minute Jimi Plays Monterey highlights the Jimi Hendrix Experience’s career-making performance, which ended with Hendrix setting his guitar alight and smashing it, while the 20-minute Shake! Otis at Monterey documents Otis Redding’s masterful live artistry.
