The IOM began airlifting more than 12,000 stranded South Sudanese who fled to Sudan to escape war in March this year.
However, the transportation which began in March affected most of returnees who used long routes to reach home as one of the returnees explained to Gurtong.
“We have really encountered numerous problems from Khartoum to Aweil via Kosti and Juba, and nobody knew that we could reach where we are today”, said Adut Wol.
The returnees had lived in Sudan before attempting to return back last year.
They were stranded at Kosti in White Nile before being airlifted to Juba in an operation led by IOM. Speaking to journalists during the occasion, the Head of Humanitarian Affairs in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State Deng Kuol confirmed that Aweil received 53 families returning from Sudan.
Kuol explained that the World Food Program (WFP) will distribute food and non-food items in the first three months before being repatriated into the community in Northern Bahr el Ghazal.
