GTC Burbank (Burbank, CA)
Fresh from the success of its Off-Broadway premiere of Eternal Equinox, Grove Theater Center returns home to Burbank to stage a 20th century theatrical masterpiece. Almost 90 years after its premiere, Elmer Rice’s The Adding Machine has lost little of its dark comedy or sharp theatricality. Called ” a landmark of American Expressionism” by Playbill, the play tells the story of Mr. Zero, an accountant at a large, faceless company. After serving diligently at his job for 35 years, he discovers he will be replaced by a machine, causing him to snap. With technology capable of ever more impressive feats, this play touches on a fear that has grown only stronger over the years. Broadway vets David Allen Jones (Jesus Christ Superstar) and Jane Macfie (Ah Wilderness!, Long Day’s Journey Into Night) lead a stellar cast, starring as Mr. Zero and his co-worker Daisy.
