Day 5 of the U.S. Open 2012 tennis tournament closed with names like Maria Sharapova, Novak Djokovic and both the Williams sisters taking the court in New York that day.

Djokovic and Sharapova started the day off with dominant victories against Rogerio Dutra Silva and Mallory Burdette respectively, and the action continued on all through the rest of the day. The most notable results from Day 5 are as follows:

Maria Sharapova (3) def. Mallory Burdette 6-1, 6-1

Andy Roddick (20) def. Bernard Tomic 6-3. 6-4, 6-0

Victoria Azarenka (1) def. Jie Zheng (28) 6-0, 6-1

John Isner (9) def. Jarkko Nieminen 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-3

Juan Martin Del Potro (7) def. Ryan Harrison 6-2, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2

Serena and Venus Williams def. Klaudia Jans-Ignacik and Krisitna Mladenovic 6-4, 6-0

Nadia Petrova (19) def. Lucie Safarova (15) 6-4, 7-5

Marion Bartoli (11) def. Kristina Mladenovic 6-2, 6-4

On Day 5, Andy Roddick advanced to the fourth round with a straight-set victory over Bernard Tomic. No. 2 seed Novak Djokovic also advanced with a straight-set win over Rogerio Dutra Silva, as did David Ferrer, Juan Martin del Potro, Janko Tipsarevic and John Isner.

As the tournament is heading towards Day 6, it will bring its own drama, complete with favorites Roger Federer and Serena Williams looking to advance in their quests for yet another Grand Slam singles title.
