Dominic Athian Dut, the Northern Bahr el Ghazal State Director for Primary health care as well as an acting Human Resources focal person in the state Ministry of Health in Aweil said that, “As water level decreases, the cases of malaria have dropped but the other disease which is common in people is pneumonia in children, this is because of a change in weather. Now the very common disease among children is coughing and the pneumonia.”
Dut says that reports received from counties indicate that children are the most affected.
“The very weak like the children less than 5 years—there is a high need for mothers to clothe them with thick clothes and also they need to bathe them when the sun is setting but not late. And if cold comes; then they should not be taken into beds so that they don’t catch the cold. Or if the baby wants to spend time outside playing—you need to put a sweater or clothe that protects him/her from cold,” he added.
He urges the parents to keep children warm and make sure that they are looked after especially during the cold season where common colds are very high.
He also appealed to the humanitarian organizations operating in the state such as Medicines Sans Frontieres and Malaria Consortium to increase their efforts in delivering the drugs for various diseases.
Athian says health educators have been mobilized in counties to help in the management of communicable diseases and there is hope to get rid of these deadly diseases.
Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs that slowly eats lungs and later cause weakness to the heart in pumping blood and lung fails to control the breathing.
