The Central Bureau of Investigation grills Gautam Khaitan, former board member of Aeromatrix, while investigating the Rs 3,600 crore chopper deal. The CBI has registered a Preliminary Inquiry into the Rs 3,760 crore VVIP chopper deal scam.
The bureau is primarily focusing on eleven individuals including former IAF chief SP Tyagi and his cousins who allegedly swung the deal in AgustaWestland’s favor. Three cousins of former IAF Chief SP Tyagi – Julie, Dosca and Sandeep – Gautam Khaitan, Pravin Bakshi, Guisseppe Orsi, Bruno Spagnolini, Guido Haschke, Carlo Gerosa and Christian Michel along with four companies – Finmeccanica, AgustaWestland, Chandigarh based IDS Infotech and Aeromatrix – are under critical scrutiny.
The former Air Chief Tyagi has denied all the allegations against him and claims to have finalized the deal through proper channels. Tyagi allegedly told the CBI that no illegal gratification was received by him in the deal and that he never tried to influence it.
Tyagi said: “I have no idea how my name has appeared in this report. I am shocked and in disbelief. I have had nothing to do with this. How could I have been bribed? Tyagi Brothers are my cousins. They have told me they had nothing to do with the VVIP chopper scam.
“To the best of my knowledge no requirements were tweaked. I have checked with my colleagues also, there were no requirements tweaked up to three months before I left. After that what happened, I will not know. There is a process. There are records. We can make no changes in any deal. The IAF can only recommend changes and only ministry can make changes. I made no changes in any deals.”
