LADIES LUGGING GEAR comes back this month with an ART EXTRAVAGANZA of BODACIOUS MAKING MINDS of the FEMALE KIND that are QUITE THE FIND. So check it out: First off, we are so honoured and happy to be hosting this month’s gathering amidst the works of PERIOD PIECE: THE GYMNOLANDSCAPE, curated by two art stars in their own right Petra Collins and Sonja Ahlers. Invite to the PERIOD PIECE opening (which includes a dance party and other whimsical adventures here https://www.facebook.com/events/380516408712250/) Secondly, this is what we got in store for you come March 20th – the official LLG #3 salon, in the gallery space. Presenters: 1) SONJA AHLERS Aside from having curated the show we’ll be basking in, Sonja Ahlers is an award winning visual artist and poet currently living in Whitehorse, Yukon. An autodidact without formal training, Ahlers both makes use of and has expanded upon the notion of the artist’s book as a way to challenge the often closed system of the art gallery. Ahlers pushes the envelope of what an artist’s book might be, in both her published work and her book-inspired installations that fill entire rooms. Delicately fusing collage and text with a diary-like sincerity and contemporary social analysis through a feminist lens, Ahlers pioneers what could be called the highbrow zine, utilizing a style and voice developed in the North American west coast underground. She is currently producing a stop-motion short entitled The O Complex; a story inspired by Freudian dream symbolism. A young man named Hans is afflicted by nightmares. In the afterglow of a dream he murders his father and drives into the night, only to fulfill his plight by the auto-flesh of a car crash orgy. Her animated sets are constructed from magazine cut-outs and composed as moving collages. Teaser of The ‘O’ Complex here https://vimeo.com/18902700 3) LAURA DAWE Laura is a young filmmaker extroardinaire! A graduate of the Canadian Film Centre and a director with a beautiful eye, Laura is a million things at once: poet, illustrator, painter, writer, stick and poke pro, and of course, filmmaker. She shot a short with the CFC last year called DREEMER on 35 mm, which was the last 35 mm to be developed at Technicolour Toronto before they closed. Sigh. Come check out her work! More here: http://daaawe.com/ ~*~*~*~*~ POTENTIAL SPECIAL MUSICAL PERFORMANCE TO BOOT ~*~*~*~ Cross those digits for such luck of the musical cosmos to come our way! As usual there will be lotsa time to chill, chat, drink and meet other inspiring makers in Toronto! Everyone is welcome, though we highlight and showcase the works of women. PLEASE TAKE NOTE THAT THIS TIME, BECAUSE OF THE VENUE, WE HAVE TO SELL BEER IN ACCORDANCE WITH OCAD U LICENSING AGREEMENTS, THAT WE HAD TO BUY. SO, THIS IS PROBABLY THE ONLY TIME LLG WILL NOT BE BYOB AS FAR AS WE CAN SEE. PLEASE COME WITH A SMALL CHUNK OF CHANGE TO GET YOURSELF ON THE TRAIN TO LIBATION STATION. MUCH LOVE <3 D o n o t m i s s i t g u y s t h i s w i l l b e s o g r e a t ! PS – Curious about what it’s all about? For those unfamilar, the purpose of LLG is to come get to know one another, demo projects and get feedback, bounce ideas around for collaboration, divulge in some skill sharing, and generally poke at the fire to see what new creative relationships might arise for us all. There are tons of women in the city who fit into the category; theyre brilliant, they tell stories, they use non-traditional techniques to do so, and most of all: we want to meet them. While LLGs gatherings are salon-style, theyre not about academic laurel resting. LLG provides a more progressive and safe space for emerging women in media to get going as well as more experienced media-makers. We strive to create a positive environment where women come to share their ideas, questions, tips, and advice on the basis of project-empowerment and a celebration of female know-how. Lastly, while Ladies Lugging Gear is created for women, it is really a group that supports all under-represented people in technology and media. LLG is a trans-positive space, as well as a community that welcomes men. Ultimately, the gist is that LLG is a celebration of the work of all women-identifying people. ***Event image is a still from Rafaela Kino’s animation UTOPIA ***<div class=”feedflare”>
