B.C. Liberal Party leader, Christy Clark, might have been victorious in winning another mandate for her party to govern B.C., however she still needs to win a seat to be present at the legislature. Clark was defeated by a New Democrat candidate, David Eby, by 785 votes in Vancouver-Point Grey riding on Tuesday night. This is the first time since 1924 that a B.C. politician has become premier without winning a seat. Even though Clark can still become the premier without a seat, she still needs one to enter the legislature. Now analysts are anticipating that an MLA in some so-called “safe” Liberal riding will give up their seat and allow Clark to run in a byelection.
Rival NDP candidate in the Clark’s riding, David Eby, who recently stepped down from the position of executive director of the B.C. Civil Liberties Association, maneuvered a tough campaign in the riding, especially taking advantage of the time which Clark spent touring rest of the province campaigning for Liberal votes.
Eby indicated two major aspects of his victory in Vancouver-Point Grey, saying that “the first is the environment, the issue of the increase in tanker traffic off the coast and the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline project … Christy Clark [is] ignoring that as an issue.” He further added that “the second is the community connection, the fact that I live in the neighbourhood. I’ve been at the all-candidates meetings. It’s really resonated with people. We’ve worked really hard in this riding and people in this neighbourhood knew it.”
