Santa Monica Bay Woman’s Club (Santa Monica, CA)
Celebrate The Year of Italian Culture and the bicentennial of Giuseppe Verdi’s birth with this two-part program from the Vineyard Touring Opera. First, you’ll see a performance of act four of Victor Hugo’s The King Amuses Himself, the play that inspired Verdi’s opera Rigoletto. The talented cast will then perform the corresponding scenes from the famous opera, including the quartet, the storm scene and the aria “La donna è mobile.” Seeing the two works performed back to back will give you an insight into how the composer and librettist Francesco Maria Piave were able to maintain the integrity of the source material under the rigorous Austrian Board of Censors. The second part of the program is Ruggero Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, one of the world’s most-performed operas. Based on a true story, Pagliacci features the famous aria, “Vesti la giubba,” in which Canio laments that he must make people laugh even when his heart is breaking. Experience the works of two great Italian artists with this multipart performance at the Santa Monica Bay Woman’s Club.
