The most highlighted and controversial link of the Lac-Megantic calamity, i.e. its train engineer, has decided to speak out through his lawyer. Engineer Tom Harding’s Lawyer, Thomas Walsh, stated that his client is completely devastated by the events. He revealed on Tuesday that his client is staying at an undisclosed location in the province, on his advice, in order to evade consistent bombarding of journalists at his Eastern Townships home.

Walsh alleged that “I used the word ‘devastated’ and I think that’s one word that’s applicable, but he’s very, very low.” He added that “we’re looking to organize something to see if he can meet with someone more professional.” Walsh explained that Harding is fully co-operating with all authorities as he has already narrated his version of events to several authorities. He stated that “he was interviewed for a long period of time by the Sûreté du Quebec and by the safety investigators from Transport Canada last week.” Walsh added that “he subsequently, on my advice, got out of circulation and the basic reason is … I felt that he had to get some place where he wasn’t going to be constantly faced with journalists.”

Harding’s lawyer further revealed that his family and union have provided him with utmost support, though his employer remains elusive in this regard. Walsh mentioned that Montreal, Maine and Atlantic Railway did not show any support or provided any relief since the accident. Harding’s role at the time of accident has become a controversial issue in the ongoing investigations into the tragedy.
