The Technical Standards & Safety Authority has laid 20 charges against an Ottawa-area water park that raise concerns regarding safety violations in conclusion of year-long investigation conducted by Ontario’s public safety regulator. The announcement made by the TSSA on Tuesday explained that the charges were filed against the Calypso Theme Waterpark located in Limoges, Ont.

The TSSA officials elucidated that the charges mostly revolve around a series of incidents on three of the park’s slides, some of which resulted in serious injuries. The TSSA has explained that the investigation was launched after receiving complaints from park patrons in the last two years. The authority mentioned in a statement that “the investigation was one of the most comprehensive investigations of an amusement park TSSA has ever conducted.”

The owner and operator of Calypso Waterpark, Guy Drouin, alleged that his management is “strongly committed” to the safety of its visitors, hence it always cooperated with the TSSA. In a statement issued on Tuesday, he alleged that “my staff and I have worked closely with the TSSA since these issues were first raised two years ago.” Drouin’s lawyer for the park, Lawrence Greenspon, also reiterated that he was completely shocked to learn of the charges. He stated that “the laying of these 20 charges is a surprising abuse of power. All of these allegations have been addressed to ensure the public’s safety. They are already the subject of another process with the same Ministry responsible for TSSA.”
