Lack Of Teachers Blamed For Low South Sudan Secondary Examination Registration

Following the attempts made by the national ministry of education to improve the South Sudan curriculum, more efforts still need to be done to a consensus of modifying uniform curriculum in the 10 states.

The examinations for the senior four students in Northern Bahr el Ghazal state begun in only two registered centres of Aweil National and Marialbaai Secondary Schools both taking the South Sudan curriculum.

Only four girls were registered out of the 103 students sitting for examinations at Aweil National secondary school while Marialbaai has only one girl out of 13 students registered for the examinations.

In his opening speech amidst the commencement of the examinations in the state, the secretary of the examinations council, Andrea Riiny Bak Lual, said the state has few numbers of students sitting for the national examinations as the country is gradually changing from the foreign curriculum and hence has to undergo slight obstacles in implementation.

“Here in Northern Bahr el Ghazal state, we are taking the three curriculums examinations of Sudan, Uganda and the national one, for these curriculums, Sudan curriculum where students study only three levels in the secondary schools has been the commonest one in almost all states followed by Ugandan curriculum while the national curriculum of South Sudan has just been introduced recently which is yet to be adopted fully, and that is why there are few students,” Lual told journalists.

He also says that another major reason that hinders the good number to sit for the South Sudan curriculum has been a lack of qualified English teachers especially in sciences sections. (READ: Minister Wants Gradual Phase Out Of Arabic) 

“The issue of issues of teachers being scarce in the country is worrying but in this state is really of great concerns and checking us lots, if compared the statistics of all 29 secondary schools in the state, you will find that only Aweil national has few English science teachers but those are not from within, they are from East Africa, another best school with science teachers is Marialbaai Secondary school that has international teachers from East Africa, Europe and other parts of the world,” he said.

Lual also reiterated that the rest of 29 secondary schools have not been able to sit for South Sudan School curriculum due to inadequate number of teachers in the state. (READ: Ministry Invites Applications For 50 Secondary School Teaching Positions)
