Montreal’s Pierre Elliot Trudeau Airport announced to suspend all its flights for almost three hours on Saturday due to freezing rain, but services have now resumed to normal. In an announcement made through Twitter at 4:30 a.m., the airport authority mentioned that “operations at Montreal-Trudeau are temporarily suspended due to ice rain.” An estimate of 145 flights were mostly cancelled due to the icy conditions.
As the flights resumed after almost two hours, another message was posted at the airport’s website that advised all travelers to consult their airlines. It said that “operations are gradually starting back. Thanks for your understanding. For more information on departures and arrivals, please contact your carrier.” However, a freezing rain warning is still in effect for Quebec, and a total of 2 to 10 millimetres of freezing rain is anticipated to fall throughout the province, out which the highest amounts are expected to fall just north of the St. Lawrence River.
The warning announced by Environment Canada, issued on Saturday morning, cautioned to stay watchful for freezing rain in Ottawa. According to the agency, freezing rain is associated with a warm front, and is expected to move out of the area by early afternoon as temperatures rise above the freezing mark. In addition to that, Pearson International Airport have also encountered computer glitches which caused major delays for travellers at around 5 a.m., as it announced “we apologize for the slowdowns with the check in process. Software problems continue and IT service providers are working hard to fix it.”
