Quebec’s Health Minister, Rejean Hebert, informed reporters on Monday that the provincial government is speeding up introduction of strict laws on installing sprinklers at seniors’ residences in light of an eradicating fire that is believed to have killed 32 people last week. Police has been digging deep with snow squalls and biting cold to recover bodies of victims from the blazed site in the town of L’Isle-Verte on Monday.

Ruins of the Residence du Havre, blatantly burnt on Thursday, are being ridded of ice to surface encased bodies. Authorities claim to have recovered 10 bodies while the remaining 22 missing persons are presumed dead, out of which only three have been identified.  Investigators revealed that the three-story wooden home was only partially equipped with sprinklers, which is not an obligatory in privately run Quebec residences where some of the residents are mobile.

Quebec government had already formed a special committee of police, fire-prevention and building experts last year to focus into how to tighten regulations on sprinklers in privately run seniors’ homes. After meeting with survivors, Minister Hebert mentioned that “it’s not a simple problem. If it had been simple it would have been done (already).” He added that “we’re still working very hard on this and I think the tragedy of L’Isle-Verte will probably accelerate the work of this committee.” Whereas, Quebec Premier Pauline Marois alleged on Sunday that she is  waiting for the committee’s report and the results of the official police inquiry into Thursday’s fire before deciding her course of action.
