According to a recently obtained letter, NDP Leader Andrea Horwath has straightforwardly threatened to topple Premier Kathleen Wynne’s minority Liberals in case the budget imposes any new taxes on Ontarians. Sources claims that the letter authored by NDP leader was hand-delivered to the premier’s office at Queen’s Park on Monday night and said that “I will not support any new taxes, tolls or fees that hit middle-class families.”
The New Democrats have the leash of the government in house, which is scheduled to come in order again on Tuesday after a 10-week recess, and have used it frequently in the past to seek concessions in the last two budgets from the Liberals in office. These concessions and NDP’s support have successfully kept Progressive Conservative Leader, Tim Hudak, silent as the official opposition leader, who keeps pushing for an election since losing the October 2011 campaign to former Liberal premier Dalton McGuinty. In a letter authored on Monday, Wynne officially sought “input on the next provincial budget” from both Horwath and Hudak.
Ontario’s Finance Minister, Charles Sousa, is endeavoring to circumvent an $11.7-billion deficit and is expected to table a finalized budget in late March or early April. In case the opposition parties unite against the budget, voters might have to go to the polls in late May or early June. Wynne has recently stated that “it is in the best interest of the people of Ontario that we make this legislature work and I believe there are areas of shared interest where we can concentrate our efforts.”
