The victim Clifford ClarkeTwo women have been sentenced to one year jail each on Tuesday after starving their savage dog for so long that it attacked and killed an elderly neighbour pensioner to death.

A judge at Liverpool Crown Court has told Hayley Sulley, 30, of Richard Kelly Close, and Della Woods, 29, of Swallowhurst Crescent, Norris Green, that the pensioner was “literally eaten alive” by their starved dog “dangerously out of control.”

The retired hospital porter Clifford Clarke, 79, was attacked during the last May in his garden in Liverpool after he opened his back door while cooking his meal. The animals belonging to the women escaped from Sulley’s home through a gap in the fence.

The court heard that the dangerous dog had not been fed for at least 45 hours before the attack upon the elderly neighbour, who walked with a stick and had undergone two hip replacement operations.

One of the neighbours had called the police after hearing the screams coming from Mr Clarke’s house in Richard Kelly Close, Norris Green.

The neighbour became horrified on seeing the pensioner on the floor being dragged and mauled by the dog.

When armed police arrived on the scene, they shot the dog dead.

But Mr Clarke succumbed to his injuries shortly afterwards in hospital.

Tests carried on later showed that the dog, known as Charlie, had been starving before the attack.

Last month, Hayley Sulleyn and Della Woods had pleaded guilty to an offence under the Dangerous Dogs Act of allowing a dog to entering a prohibited place for dogs and injuring a person.

The pair had also admitted three offences of causing unnecessary suffering to a dog.
