Recently fired and accused former CBC radio host, Jian Ghomeshi, has reportedly hired renowned criminal lawyer, Marie Henein, to fight allegation of assault and sexual abused laid by nine women and a man. Henein is well known for her rigor and well-preparedness in the courtroom since she has a number of high-profile wins to her name.
Henein is best known for representing former attorney general, Michael Bryant, and the recently accused 27-year-old woman for tossing a beverage at Mayor Rob Ford at the Taste of Little Italy festival in 2013. Whereas on the other hand, Toronto police sex crimes unit has announced to be investigating at least three complaints against Ghomeshi, although it have not laid any charges as yet. Addressing last week’s gala dinner honouring past presidents of the Criminal Lawyers Association, Henein, CLA treasurer and the evening’s emcee, joked about Ghomeshi. She mentioned that “as criminal lawyers we represent people who have committed heinous acts. Acts of violence. Acts of depravity. Acts of cruelty. Or as Jian Ghomeshi likes to call it, foreplay.”
Moreover, addressing the crowd of about 450 lawyers, she also joked that she and Eddie Greenspan, famed Canadian criminal lawyer and the evening’s keynote speaker, have worked together for many years. She alleged that “some criminal. Some regulatory. Some light BDSM.” Both jokes drew huge laughs from the crowd at the Ritz Carlton. Impressive Henein now leads her own defence firm, Henein Hutchison LLP, after working as partner at Greenspan’s firm.
