The 45-year-old former military member who allegedly plotted to attack the Veteran Affairs building but was arrested back in January with loaded rifle, ammunition, and jugs of chemicals intended to make explosives has pleaded guilty to multiple charges. According to the police, maps of the Bantrel Tower on the corner of 6 Avenue and 6 Street SW were also discovered at the time of arrest.

The suspect plead guilty to firearms and explosives charges on Thursday as Crown Prosecutor, Doug Simpson, confirmed to have considered but not charged him with terrorism. The man’s wife alerted RCMP earlier this year as she was afraid of her husband’s death. The suspect left military in 2011 and was placed on long term disability. However, he had a long-term dispute with the government over healthcare costs after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

Federal Veteran Affairs Critic, Peter Stoffer, highlighted that “these people are under a lot of tremendous stress and they may say or do things that they normally wouldn’t do under normal circumstances.” He urged that “please, please make sure you increase the human and financial resources to ensure that the men and women who serve in our military and RCMP and their families get the immediate help that they need.” Moreover, Stoffer stressed that security also needs to be a priority. He alleged that “things like panic buttons, cameras, locked doors, people on the front to provide additional security, making sure I.D. is checked and that nature,” adding that “this is happening in some facilities across the country. A sentencing date for ‘GG’ will be set for next year.
