Ontario’s licensing agency for dentists has warned that if Dalhousie University fails to provide name and identities of 13 students involved in making violent, anti-female comments on the Internet, then all students graduating this year from Dalhousie should be prepared to take the heat when applying to get a licence to work in Ontario.

Registrar of Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario, Irwin Fefergrad, highlighted that the university has so far failed to respond to the regulator’s Dec. 31 letter. He explained that in case things go south, all Dalhousie students will be asked to provide a confirmation letter assuring that they are not one of the 13 students. Fefergrad stated that “there’s no room in the health care system for this,” stressing “zero, zero, zero.” He said that “this is something that really caused great concern,” adding that “the conduct is deplorable.” He underlined that “we have one responsibility, and that is to look after the public interest.” Fefergrad pointed out that though universities can grant degrees in dentistry, students still have to seek licences to make it legal to practice so “they would have to apply to a regulatory body to get their licences.”

Meanwhile, Dalhousie University announced on Monday morning to have had partially suspended the 13 dental students, nearly a month after women complained about the violent anti-women comments they posted on Facebook. The university’s president and dean of the Faculty of Dentistry said that “the suspension is necessary to ensure a safe and supportive environment for patients and classmates who participate in the clinics.”
