mexican president pena nieto arrives in quebec ahead of three amigos summitThe president of Mexico, Enrique Pena Nieto, has arrived in Ontario, Canada on Monday on a visit that will include a meeting with North American leaders including Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, and the United States President, Barrack Obama. President Pena Nieto will be giving a speech alongside Premier Philippe Couillard before dining with PM Trudeau at Casa Loma on Monday evening in Toronto.

Later Mr. Pena Nieto will leave for the national capital for an official state visit and join the “Three Amigos Summit” on Wednesday with his counterparts from U.S. and Canada. Economy and climate change are anticipated to be the main agenda of the meeting but Britain’s vote to leave the European Union will certainly be included as well. The meeting of the trio was cancelled last year partly due to Canada-U.S. dispute over the Keystone XL oil pipeline and an ongoing Canada-Mexico fight over visa requirements.

Trudeau and Pena Nieto are likely to commit publicly for Canada-Mexico co-operation, especially on climate action, as a counterpoint to the trade protectionism and anti-immigrant sentiment that has overtaken this year’s U.S. presidential race. Although experts believe Obama should work on the North American relationship to solidify his environmental policy legacy and shield the North American Free Trade Agreement from political turmoil but the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, Donald Trump, has advocated tough new immigration policies, border defences and possible new trade barriers.
