The federal government was accused Tuesday of intimidating witnesses and poking its nose in to the National Energy Board’s hearings of Northern Gateway pipeline review.
PM Harper and Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver carped radical environmental groups financed by the U.S. trusts. They said these groups have full influence over the Northern Gateway trials.
Liberal interim leader Bob Rae said: “Other groups do that as well. But once the environmental process happens, the prime minister should keep quiet; Mr. Oliver should keep quiet, and should respect the process.”
According to Rae, Harper’s government is using high-pressure tactics to endorse the Northern Gateway plan. He said the government doesn’t understand the limits of its authority.
“It does not understand the rule of law. It does not respect due process.”
In response to the recent comments from NDP MP Nathan Cullen, Rae warned the government’s announcements threaten to influence the NEB’s panel decision on the environmental and economic implications of the $5.5-billion project to bring Alberta’s oilsands resource to Asian markets.
Rae said: “This is a process that has to be respected, and if it loses its integrity then it loses its credibility and the results of the hearing will not be accepted by people. And you want a process that has integrity. You want a process that is respected by people, and with everybody who feels they’ve had a fair hearing.”
