The table is set for the first Grand Slam event of the 2012 season as the draw for the Australian Open was made on Friday in Melnourne. Four Canadians have earned direct entry into the main draw, Stéphanie Dubois (Laval, QC), Rebecca Marino (Vancouver, BC), Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON) and Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, QC).
Raonic will try and repeat his exploits from last season when he reached the fourth round in Melbourne. Seeded no. 23 in the men’s draw, Raonic will meet Filippo Volandri of Italy in the opening round. In his section of the draw, he faces potential match ups with Andy Roddick in the third round and Novak Djokovic in the Round of 16. On the women’s side, Dubois, who is back on the Tour after dealing with an injury at the end of last season, will face Russian Elena Vesnina. Currently ranked no. 50 on the WTA rankings, Vesnina reached no. 22 on the world rankings in 2009. For her part, Marino will take on Greta Arn of Hungary who is eleven years her senior. For her part, Wozniak, who qualified for three of the four Grand Slams in 2011, drew world no. 126 Shuai Zhang for her first match Down Under. Wozniak earned direct entry into Australian Open main draw following the withdrawal of Timea Bacsinszky.
Pierre-Ludovic Duclos, Peter Polansky and Vasek Pospisil will attempt to win \two more qualifying matches to join their compatriots in the main draw.
