The residents who took to the streets yesterday morning following the killing of two people by unknown gunmen accused security organs of complacency.
The two, a pregnant woman and a man were shot dead on Friday night in an incident blamed on the police.
Juba City Council Deputy Mayor Brigadier David Lokonga told Gurtong that two motor bicycles were stolen during the attack.
He said the attackers were said to be clad in army uniforms, adding that several gangs reside in Nyakuron, Munuki, Gudele and Tamping, mainly in slum residential areas.
He denied reports that police were protecting the criminals and called for co-operation of the area residents.
“Security is not only the responsibility of the police. I appeal to the public to cooperate and address this issue together. The city council and the Ministry of Infrastructure are working towards ensuring that all the slum settlements are demolished”, said Lokonga.
South Sudan’s Inspector General of Police General Tito Achuil called for combined effort in the fight against insecurity.
“Let the responsibility lie with all of us. From now I am going to organise the youth and the police to work together in combating insecurity”, he told the peaceful protestors.
The protest comes just a week after Juba authorities announced a major security improvement in the South Sudanese capital.
