This fall, indulge in the cool tunes of Plena Libre. Founded in San Juan by bass player-composer Gary Nuñez, Plena Libre has virtually re-invented the sound of Puerto Rico’s plena and bomba traditions with hard-hitting horns, master hand-drummers, five close-harmonizing vocalists, and innovative choreography. Along the way, the group’s unique Afro-Rican sound has earned it four Grammy nominations and spots on the lineup at prestigious international jazz festivals. A major force in Latin music, Plena Libre’s music continues to evolve, incorporating the likes of merengue and salsa. Experience what the Boston Herald calls a “mad weave of polyrhythms that simply sizzle.”
