Malaysia’s government said it has planned to close its embassy in Syria. Anifah Aman, the Foreign Minister said the Malaysian ambassador to Damascus and four other embassy spokespersons would be momentarily withdrawn after 128 students are brought back to Kuala Lumpur. Bureaucrats were also advising other Malaysians in Syria to leave right away.
Today, Wisma Putra spokeswoman said that the first 50 Malaysians should be sent away from Syria because of the worsening security threat in the country, that were expected to reach home on a special flight this Tuesday. She told the reporters, “Further information on the process would be received latest by tonight or tomorrow morning.” She also said to ensure the safety of Malaysian citizens, the Malaysian Embassy in Damascus had assembled all the citizens at the embassy. She added that the evacuation was being coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Security Council in collaboration with the Malaysian Embassy in Damascus.
Datuk Seri Najib, the Prime Minister said that the government had planned to bring home all Malaysian citizens instantaneously, including students, from Syria due to the growing turbulence in the country.
The Prime Minister also decided to shut the Malaysian Embassy in Damascus as a precautionary measure and momentarily remove the ambassador and other officials, after the evacuation exercise was completed. A total of 138 Malaysians comprising 128 students and 10 expatriates were registered with the Embassy. In the meantime, General Tan Sri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin, the Malaysian Armed Forces commander said they were prepared to help in the evacuation exercise. He said, “The Armed Forces has received orders from the National Security Council but cannot reveal the details yet.”
