Ford Amphitheatre (Hollywood, CA)
Hawaiian for jam session, Kanikapila is a free-flowing un-structured sudden outburst of dancing and singing just for the fun of it. AlohaFest! Kanikapila! features Southern California talent from two Pacific island cultures. The indigenous Maori warrior traditions of New Zealand come to life with poi balls, sticks and the ever popular haka or war chant performed by Halau Hula a Kawika Laua ‘O Leinani. And the audience is invited to join along with Isle Entertainment as dancers perform traditional Samoan dances to live music, including the sasa or slap dance. Other highlights include traditional Hawaiian hula with both the kahiko (ancient) and auana (modern) forms and the Ford debut of the Kalama Brothers — the newest rising stars from Hawaii whose acoustic sound is a blend of rhythm and blues, rock and Hawaiian. Singer-songwriter Tini Grey, whose acoustic sound is influenced by jazz, soul and country, adds to the mix. The show will be hosted by Angela Baraquio Grey, Miss America 2001.
