A beauty queen who was identified as one of the top-ranked suspects of Stanley Cup riot while she was being crowned as Miss Congeniality during a beauty pageant has pleaded guilty in court. 21-years-old Sophie Laboissonniere’s lawyer appeared in court on Monday, for entering a guilty plea on her behalf.
Laboissonniere, a resident of Richmond, B.C., was few of the very first people to be identified as suspects of the riot and were consequently charged afterwards. Laboissonniere was quickly identified due to the vigilance of media, when she won the title of Miss Congeniality at a local beauty pageant. Soon after, the name and photograph of Laboissonniere was spread all over the country. She has been indicted with one count of charge for participating in a riot and one count of charge for breaking and entering. The court will be hearing numerous cases of rioters, one of which is Laboissonniere, who torched cars, smashed windows and looted stores around her.
The details of Laboissonniere’s conduct will be disclosed once the hearing is pronounced, when she is actually obligated to attend court. Baker alleged that “I don’t think it’s appropriate for me to be commenting on the facts now, but I can say this: compared to the vast majority of people charged here, her participation in this riot was at the very low end of the scale.” Baker informed media while exiting provincial court, that “she has received a level of notoriety that goes way beyond the offence she committed. She’s stuck with that for a long time.” When inquired about Laboissonniere’s absence at court, Baker pointed at cameras and reporters, and said “to avoid this.”
