Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said Tuesday that Abbu Sayyaf is now a marginalized group. The bandit group Abbu Sayyaf has time and again demonstrated its strength by kidnapping foreigners and other high profile individuals.
“The Abu Sayyaf [members are] very few. They have been marginalized. We are able to isolate them especially so with the recent encounter of the MNLF and the Abu Sayyaf,” Gazmin said.
Gazmin accredited the Moro National Liberation Front for providing the forces useful information about the bandits, which has made it easier to weaken them. He said that the government is working to setting the remaining captives free from Abu Sayyaf.
Recently, Australian national Warren Rodwell was set free after his family paid a ransom of P4 million. Rodwell was one of Abu Sayyaf’s victims for over a year. However, Gazmin explained that the matter is still sensitive as security forces have to give priority to safe rescue of hostages. They do not want to repeat the incident where American Martin Burnham and Filipino nurse Deborah Yap were caught in the crossfire and died.
“We would want to prevent that from happening again, that is why we are studying the [rescue plan] carefully and we are coming up with a good plan so that the victims will not be hurt,” Gazmin said.
