The government of Angola has promised to ensure freedom of speech for its journalists and providing room for unrestricted growth to upcoming reporters. The government released a statement on Friday, showing its solidarity with the World Press Freedom Day and celebrating its 20th founding anniversary by the UN.
“The Angolan government is committed to proceeding with its efforts in creating necessary conditions, favourable for the free exercising of the journalist activity in Angola, according to what is enshrined in the constitution, thus protecting one of the fundamental rights of citizens, which is the freedom of expression”, reads the statement.
The Angolan government has also requested the national media professionals to reflect on the values that lead their activities in all circumstances. It has urged them to reconsider the code of conduct and ethics to ensure high quality of public service that they provide to the society.
May 3 has been dedicated to Freedom of Press by the United Nations General Assembly with an aim to raise awareness of the significance of independent media. Every year, UNESCO awards a UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize to a deserving individual, organization or institution that has made an outstanding contribution to the promotion of press freedom. An independent jury of 14 news professionals selects the most deserving award receiver.
