Local authorities have confirmed the arrest of a 60-year-old Canadian citizen in Somalia, Omar Shire Husein, who is accused of having murdered his four sons with a knife. According to local media sources, it is alleged that police took custody of Omar Shire Husein on Sunday evening in the central city of Beledweyn, after his four young children including 7-year-old Yahye, 6-year-old twins Idiris and Sakariye, and 3-yaer-old Yonis, were found dead.
The boys’ mother, Qadro Husein Addawe, was reached via telephone in Mogadishu, when she cried that “he has taken my blood!” asserting that “I don’t have anything. I lost my children and I don’t have anyone to help me now.” 29-year-old Addawe explained that she married 60-year-old Husein in 2005 after he had spent 30 years driving a taxi in Calgary and another Canadian city she could not recall. She added that “he’s a citizen,” and I hoped to spend a better life with him. The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Development has not commented on the situation as yet.
Addawe narrates that after marrying in Ethiopia, she gave birth to their first boy in Kenya, after which the twins were born in Uganda, though their last child was born in 2010 in Somalia. Addawe elucidated that after establishing again in Beledweyn, Husein began threatening her and the boys. A short while later she had to leave her sons so she could make a long journey to the capital where she could receive proper treatment in a hospital.
