Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has recently alleged that he’s “very concerned” regarding the reports claiming that Communications Security Establishment Canada spied on Brazil’s ministry of mines and energy. During his ongoing tour of Indonesia, where Mr. Harper is attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, He declared that Canadian officials are “reaching out” to their Brazilian counterparts.

On the other hand, Brazilian President, Dilma Rousseff, summoned and inquired regarding the allegations from the Canadian ambassador on Monday. An investigative news program has reported that spies from CESC had accessed communications within Brazil’s mines and energy ministry. On her official Twitter timeline, Rousseff stated that espionage is “unacceptable among countries that claim to be partners.” The report broadcasted on Brazil’s Globo TV cited evidence from documents leaked by former U.S. National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden. A journalist reporting on Snowden’s leaks and the NSA for quite some time, Glenn Greenwald, worked in collaboration with Globo to produce the report.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Communications Security Establishment Canada has alleged that the agency “does not comment on foreign intelligence gathering activities,” while adding that it cannot target Canadians under the law. Harper further added to his statement that his administration will conduct “appropriate follow-up” on the matter, while highlighting that the commissioner at the CSEC is solely tasked to make sure that the agency operates under Canadian law. The Globo TV report did not clarify whether Canadian spies read emails or listened to phone calls at the Brazilian ministry.
