A report released by Statistics Canada on Wednesday found that millions of Canadians are still giving up their landlines and switching to cellphones instead, illustrating almost three per cent increase in cellphone-exclusive households. Statistics reveal that the number of Canadian homes having cellphone alone increased from 12.8 to 15.7 per cent in 2011 and 2012, whereas cellphone ownership in general was reported by more than eight in 10 households (81.4 per cent).
Moreover, the statistics show that the average annual spending on cellphones, text services and pagers have also increased to a record breaking high of $832, whereas on the other hand, landline costs decreased to all-time low of $446. The numbers revealed recently are found to be consistent with a trend being observed since 2009, when mobile communication costs outperformed those of landlines. Meanwhile, it is notable that landlines haven’t have seen annual spending gains since 2002. On the other hand, it was highlighted that Canadians are equally progressive when it comes to technology, since it was reported that cable connections have allegedly increased in proportion of households, i.e. 36.8 per cent, followed by high-speed telephone connections at 27.5 per cent and wireless Internet connections at only 13.3 per cent.
These statistics were extracted from a detailed national snapshot of household spending on everything from shelter to food, transportation to healthcare. Statistics Canada highlighted an overall outright increase of a two per cent, to $56,279, in the average amount Canadians shelled out on goods and services in 2012.
