Greek Theatre (Los Angeles, CA)
Stellar singer-songwriters cut from the same folk rock, socially-conscious cloth, Joan Baez and Indigo Girls co-headline a special pre-Independence Day show under the stars at the Greek Theatre. A true American legend and recipient of the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, Joan Baez kicked off her 50-plus year career at the 1959 Newport Folk Festival and has been a musical and personal beacon for political and social justice ever since, with her versions of protest songs like “We Shall Overcome” and “Joe Hill” considered true classics. The Indigo Girls, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers, began performing together as Georgia high-school students, and attracted a loyal cult following in the late ’80s for their richly emotional songwriting and their own strong commitment to social causes. Their songs “Galileo,” “Shame on You” and “Closer to Fine” were ’90s alternative rock hits, and 1989’s self-titled album and 1994’s Swamp Ophelia both went platinum. They teamed with Pink in 2006 for the successful single, “Dear Mr. President,” and have earned their reputation as one of the folk scene’s most compelling live acts.
