The day after unexpectedly winning a majority government in the province, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne did not waste any time to get back to business. Wynne scheduled a mid-morning meeting with Lieutenant-Governor David Onley and requested him to call the legislature back, along with another meeting with her staff in the premier’s office.

Wynne alleged that she will not waste any time and straightaway reintroduce the budget whose rejection by the opposition last month triggered the election. Wynne reached Queen’s Park at around 9:30 a.m., where she was welcomed by a cheering crowd of Liberal staffers. Stepping out of her SUV in the front steps of the legislature, Wynne stated that “it’s thrilling to be here under these circumstances, I have to say – it’s a great morning.” Furthermore, she added that “it feels clearer in some way. We know what we’re going to do, we’ve put out our plan and I’m thrilled to be here and I’m really eager to get on with it.”

According to Ms. Wynne, now that the election phase is over, she is tasked with implementing her ambitious agenda outlined in the budget. The budget overall includes a new provincial pension system aimed to double the Canada Pension Plan’s benefits for retirees, $29-billion for transit and highways over a decade and jacked up spending on social programs. However, Wynne also has to fight a sluggish economy and a massive deficit.
