The Independent Police Complaints Commission has announced to have launched an investigation into an incident when a 29-year-old man died in police custody after being arrested by police on Christmas Eve. Initial reports confirmed that police was called at a Tesco in Fordham Road, Newmarket, at around 6pm yesterday where officers arrested a theft suspect and took him to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre.

Soon after the arrest, concerns were raised for the suspect’s well-being and eventually he was shifted to the West Suffolk hospital. However, the suspect failed to survive and was pronounced deceased late on Christmas Eve. The statement issued by IPCC revealed that in accordance to standard procedure where there has been a death following police contact, a full investigation into the circumstances around the man’s death is underway and a post mortem examination will be held in due course.

IPCC spokesperson stated that “the Independent Police Complaints Commission has launched an investigation into the actions of Suffolk Police following the death of a man who became unwell whilst detained in police custody.” The statement added that “the 29-year-old man from Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, became unwell shortly after arriving at Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre at around 6.20pm yesterday. The man was transferred to West Suffolk hospital at around 7.20pm and sadly died around 11pm.” It was added that “the IPCC is in the process of reviewing CCTV evidence and speaking with anyone who had contact with the man or who may have witnessed the incident. The man’s next of kin have been informed and are being offered support at this difficult time.”
